MacDonald Drive Open Chess Tournament

Venue:

MacDonald Drive Junior High School. (See Map)

 

 

Registration:

9:15 AM to 9:45 AM. (Sharp)

Canteen:

Snack items only (no hot lunch items). 

Finish Time:

Approximately 2:00 PM.

 

 

Format:

4 rounds Swiss pairing. 30 minutes per player per game.

Tie Breaks

15 minute normal play for 1st, 2nd, 3rd tie-breakers; Speed chess (5 min) if tie-breaker game is drawn.

 

 

Entry Fee:

$10.00 per player

The tournament is for all grades (K-12).  Player will compete in one of the following sections:

 

Section 1

Rookie

Players rated below 400*

Section 2

Futurity

Players rated below 700*

Section 3

Expert

Players rated 700 or more

* Note players may elect to play in a higher section if they choose on registration.

 

Medals awarded for

  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each section.
  • Best Performance per section
  • Best performance for unrated player in section 1
  • Medal - Best performance by an MDE student

 

The event will rated by Chess’n Math.  One requested half point bye will be available per player provided the request is made to the tournament director before players are paired for the round for which the bye is desired.    No byes may be requested for the last round.

 

Important Note to Parents:

All tournament participants must be supervised by a parent or designated guardian.  Neither the Newfoundland and Labrador School Chess Association (NLSCA) nor the MacDonald Drive Schools will be held responsible for the safety or behaviour of participants not actively engaged in tournament play.  The responsibility of the tournament organizers will be limited to ensuring fair competition in accordance with NLSCA tournament rules.  (See http://www.chess.nl.ca for more information).
