Results of Balbo Open Chess Tournament

(January 15^th, 2006)

The first Balbo Open Chess Tournament was held on January 15, 2006 at Balbo Elementary in Shoal Harbour.

22 players competed from grades 4-8 from three schools in the area: Anthony Paddon Elementary, Clarenville Middle School and Balbo Elementary.

After 4 excellent rounds of chess play and then playoffs in both Junior (grades 4 & 5) and Senior (grades 6&7) divisions, the final results were as follows.

Junior Division:

The final placements in the Junior division were:

Senior Division:

The final placement in the Senior division were:

The tournament sponsors (White Hills Resort, Clarenville Twin Cinemas, Caribou Lanes and Diversions Internet Café) were thanked for their support and contribution of draw prizes.  All 1^st – 3^rd place winners received cash prizes and certificates of achievement.

This is the first of upcoming regional tournaments.  The next will be at Anthony Paddon (date to be announced).  These lead up to the regionals of the Newfoundland and Labrador School Chess Association to be held on Sunday February 12^th at Balbo, the first time a regional tournament has been held in this area.  The winners of the regionals will proceed to the provincials in St. John’s in March.
