Our traditional CFC (non-scholastic) event was held on our Labour Day weekend at the University.  This year, we have a surprise player Grant Spraggett joining our NL Chess community from the States.  Another new player in this year’s open was Aman Hambleton who has re-located from PEI.  Aman, who is only 10, was the MVP this year at the Scholastic Canadian Chess Challege in Montreal earlier this year. We have used an accelerated pairing in the first round to make the event more competitive compared to our previous NL Opens.  Edwin Tsui defended his game well against Grant Spraggett until the last minute when he flagged for his first time ever.  Andrew Smith also gave Grant Spraggett a good run of his game to end in a dead heat draw.  Our youngest player, Michael Dawson had a good comeback to win with his game against Alick Tsui after dropping a major piece.  In the end,  Grant won our championship with 4.5/5.0.  Andrew Smith, Edwin Tsui and Aman Hambleton tied for second with 3.5/5.0.  Grant’s name will be added to our prestigious NL Open perpetual trophy for 2003.
