THE ROAD TO THE CANADIAN OPEN
The Newfoundland and Labrador Chess Association (NLCA) will be undertaking a major initiative over the coming months leading up to the 2001 Canadian Chess Open to be held in Sackville, New Brunswick.
What we will be doing is having seven individual (CFC rated) tournaments, one per month, with the first scheduled for late November. Each of these tournaments will be the same as our regular tournaments; 5 round Swiss system, games at least SD/61, scheduled over a weekend with a couple of prizes available.
The basis of our new series will involve taking into account how a player does in the series of tournaments and providing the overall champion a subsidy if he would like to attend the Canadian Open.
Here=s how it will work. At the end of every individual tournament the top ten finishers will be awarded points inversely to their placing (i.e. 10 for first, 9 for second, ..., 1 for tenth with players tied will have the points shared). At the end of the 7 tournament series an individuals best 5 performances will be totaled and the person with the highest score will be offered a subsidy, which will include all profit from the 7 tournaments if they attend the Canadian Open.
At the end of each tournament a standings sheet and the current amount of the prize fund will be made available. Our hope in offering this subsidy is to make our regular tournaments more interesting and competitive and to further encourage our members to consider competing at high level tournaments outside the province.
We would like to stress that if an individual is not interested in the overall concept of the series but rather just wants to play in a tournament now and again that he will in no way be at a disadvantage.
This plan does not discriminate against such a person but rather offers them the opportunity to attend more highly competitive, better attended, and regularly scheduled tournaments.
THE RULES
1. Entry fee for each of the 7 tournaments is set at $10.
2. For individual tournaments break-point system will be used to determine placings and avoid ties.
3. A player does not have to attend any particular number of tournaments to qualify but for any tournament not attended 0 points are awarded.
4. For overall standings in case of a tie: Highest 6th tournament will be used as first tie-breaker, then 7th, and if still tied a one game playoff.
5. Absolutely no cash awarded if player does not attend and participate in 2001 Canadian Open.
6. If top finisher does not take advantage of subsidy then it will be offered to 2nd place finisher and if same result, finally to 3rd place finisher. If none of top 3 are able to attend then subsidy will be carried over until next year.
