The Newfoundland and Labrador School Chess Association (NLSCA) is made up of a group of volunteers who promote and encourage chess in our schools. We sponsor tournaments in individual schools, inter-school tournaments, regional tournaments and provincial tournaments. We have almost 1000 school children registered in the province. One of our goals is to have chess integrated into the school curriculum through the Math program. In Quebec and New Brunswick, where chess is taught combined with Math, it has been proven that their Math marks are higher and their logical thinking is enhanced. Every year we send a team of 12 players (1 from each grade 1-12) to the Canadian Chess Challenge. In 1995 and 2002, Newfoundland hosted the Canadian Chess Challenge. Last year (May 2008), the National Canadian Chess Challenge was held in Edmonton, Alberta. This year (May 2009), it will be in Toronto. For details see our Canadian Chess Challenge pages. For the past ten years we have organized successful chess camps, usually during the third week of August, providing instructions and workshops for our young chess players. Participants of the camp can play chess all day, or they can do a combination of both chess and outdoor activities This camp has been very successful and we plan to run it every year. The NLSCA does all its own fundraising and thanks to the financial support of our major sponsors, we have been able to help send our top players to the national tournaments. Newfoundland has an excellent record, one we are all proud of. We have some excellent chess players who are very competent and who have held their own against some of Canada's chess prodigies. As a team, we have placed as high as fourth in Canada at the Canadian Chess Challenge and every year we strive to improve on our overall performance.
